Tompkins´ quest to save the
wilderness
|
|
|
The
North American multimillionaire Douglas Tompkins, founder of “North Face” and “Esprit” is
today a fervent nature conservationist and activist. He and his
wife Kristine have bought nearly a million hectars of land in
South America and transformed it into private nature sanctuaries.
While receiving awards in the western world for his dedication,
locals resent the saviours of pristine wilderness as eco-colonialists
preventing progress. In the small town of Chaiten where Tompkins
main office is situated, people are disapproving of the rich
tourist’s environmental activism.
The conflict between neighbours breaks out as the government
plans a road to cut right through Tompkins’ Parque Pumalin.
This first and major project of the conservationist is like
a barrier of wilderness separating the South from
the North of the country. While the people of the impoverished Province of
Palena want the road to get connected to the more affluent
North, Tompkins sees it as
an ecological crime endangering his work.
Amidst this clash of mindset and values a volcano situated in the middle of Pumalin
erupts and everyone evacuates. The town of Chaiten gets largely destroyed, Tompkins
residence is damaged but sound.
In front of the awesome backdrop of the rainforest a human and ecological drama
unfolds because mother nature astonishingly lays down the law.

Live
in the shade of a volcano |
|
|
| A Worldwide – reportage
by Ralf Breier & Claudia Kuhland |
|
| All of a sudden and with unimaginable
power the volcano Chaitén erupts in southern Chile. The
small seaport Chaitén bogs under ashes, large parts get
destroyd. The residents get evacuated just in time – can
only take with them what is absolutely necessary. Not until
month they are allowed back to their hometown for a couple of
hours. Sneakingly two of them climb up the volcano to the crater
which is rumbling still – our camera team goes with them.
Rapidly it distinguishs: A returning to their hometown Chaitén
is hopeless. Nearby they look for a safe place where they probably
can rebuild their town. A touching and spectacular long-run
reportage in the shadow of the volcano. |

The critically acclaimed, unique documentary
on the history of a Passion.
What motivates people to dive into a
raging sea, into a ice-cold river or into the lanes of
a modern pool? This two-part history of swimming furnishes
a myriad of fascinating answers to these questions.
In the first part, long-distance swimmers conquer the English Channel, race
over 25 kilometres or dazzle with their spectacular movements in the Samurai
tradition. Since the Stone Age, swimmers have had to overcome many obstacles:
such as fear of the deep, the Medieval ban on swimming by the Church, bureaucratic
red tape and congenital illnesses.
In the second part, we see how the stopwatch, the
perfectly trained body, the coaching philosophy and
scientific research into wave patterns have become
the new battle fronts in the swimming arena. From imitating
frogs to the streamlined crawl stroke, from the cumbersome
Victorian bathing costumes to the water-repellent body
suits – the development of the modern swimming
star has been full of adventures and unexpected turns.
A new and unique documentary on the history of a passion.
Starring Ian Thorpe, Alexander Popov, Franziska van Almsick, Dawn Fraser,
Mark Spitz, Alison Streeter, John von Düffel.
